Noun and its types.

 

PARTS OF SPEECH:

Words are divided into different kinds and classes which are called Parts of speech.They do work according to their use in the sentence.The parts of speech are eight in number:

1. Noun
2. Pronoun
3. Verb
4. Adverb
5. Adjective
6. Preposition
7. Conjunction
8. Interjection.


NOUN:

A noun is a naming word used as the name of a person,place or thing.
For Example:

1. Akbar was a great king.

2. Karachi is the most populous city.

3. The rose smells sweet.

4. The sun shines bright.

TYPES OF NOUN:

There are almost nine types of noun which are discussed below:
1. Common Noun
2. Proper Noun
3. Collective Noun
4. Abstract Noun
5. Compound Noun
6. Material Noun
7. Concrete Noun
8. Countable Noun
9. Uncountable Noun




  A common noun is a name given to every person or thing of the same class or kind.OR.It is the generic name for a person,place or thing in a class or group.
A common noun is not capitilized unless it either begins a sentence or appears in a title.

1. Sara is a girl.

In this sentence,girl is a common noun.

2. Lahore is a beautiful city.

In this sentence,city is a common noun.

3. Jahangir was a wise king.

In this sentence,king is a common noun.




A proper noun is the name of some particular person or place.
OR
A proper noun is a specific name for a particular person,place or thing.
Proper Nouns always start with a capital letter at the beginning.

FOR EXAMPLE:

1. Haider is a boy.

In this sentence,Haider is a proper noun that generally states a particular person’s name.

2. Karachi is a populous city.

In this sentence,Karachi is the name of a particular place.

3. Earth is a planet.

In this sentence,Earth is a proper noun,while planet is a common noun.

Sometimes,Proper Nouns are used as common nouns.As,
He was the Lukman of his age.In this sentence Lukman is used as the common noun because Lukman was the wisest man and here,(HE) is modified as Lukman.
Khalidas is often called as Shakespeare of India.In this sentence Shakespeare is used as a common noun because Shakespeare was the greatest dramatist and here,(Khalidas) is modified as Shakespeare.

A collective noun is the name of a number (or collection) of persons or things taken together and spoken of as one whole;as,
(Crowd,Mob,Team,Flock,Herd,Army,Fleet,Jury,Family,Nation,Parliament, Committee)
Collective nouns can be used in the form of:
A Fleet= a collection of ships or vessels.
An Army= a collection of soliders.
A Crowd= a collection of people.
1. A herd of cattle is passing.
2. The French Army was defeated at Waterioo.
3. The Police dispersed the crowd.
4. A galaxy of stars.
5. A bunch of flowers.
6. A pair of shoes.
7. Our cricket team won the match.

Abstract noun is usually the name of a quality,action or state considered apart from the object it belongs.

QUALITY: 
Goodness,kindness,whiteness,darkness,hardness,brightness,honesty,wisdom,bravery.
ACTION:
Laughter,theft,movement,judgement,hatred.
STATE:
Childhood,boyhood,youth,slavery,sleep,sickness,death,poverty.
The names of arts and sciences are also abstract nouns.
For Example:
Grammar,Music,Chemistry etc.

We can speak of a BRAVE solider,a STRONG man,a BEAUTIFUL flower.But we can also think of these qualities apart from any particular person or thing and speak of Bravery,Strength,Beauty by themselves.So,also we can speak of what persons do or feel apart from the person themselves and give it a name.
Abstract Nouns are formed from:
Adjectives:
Kindness from kind.Honesty from honest.
Verbs:
Obedience from obey.Growth from grow.
Common Nouns:
Childhood from child.Slavery from slave.

1. We have to get at the truth of the matter.
2. People lost faith in banks.
3. She will defeat them.
4. Alex had a fear that he would fall down.
5. Don’t underestimate your own strength.




Countable nouns or countables are the names of objects that can be count.

Countable nouns have plural forms.Like we can say books,pens,boys,doctors etc.
FOR EXAMPLE:
Book,pen,apple,boy,sister,doctor,
horse etc.




Uncountable nouns or uncountables are the names of things which we cannot count.
FOR EXAMPLE:
Milk,oil,sugar,gold,honesty,kindness etc.
They mainly denote substances and abstract things.
Uncountable Nouns do not have plural forms like we cannot say milks,oils,sugars,golds etc.





A concrete noun is a noun that you can see,hear,smell,touch and taste.

An abstract noun  is something that you cannot see,hear,smell,touch or taste.
FOR EXAMPLE:
1. I sat on the porch with my dad.
2. We took a tour of the castle.
3. I wore a beautiful dress to the dance.
4. I put on a new pair of shoes.
5. I saw a bear in the woods.

A compound noun is a noun made up of two or more existing words.
FOR EXAMPLE:
Apple tree
House keeper
Upstairs
Ice-cream
Lady-bug
Bus stop
Thunderstorm
Classmate
Foot ball


Material nouns are names of materials or substances out of which things are made.

Material noun is the name given to the material,substance or things made up of alloy.

FOR EXAMPLE:

Gold,Iron,Silver,Plastic etc.

Like,we can say that:

1. These chairs are made of PLASTIC.

2. This jewellery is made of GOLD.

3. This is an IRON rod.
